The Cold Room No 5 – Be My Guest

The Cold Room 5 - Be My Guest ANZACS by Australian Artist Merry Sparks

This painting celebrates the Centenary of the ANZACS – who in 1915, landed on “ANZAC Cove” in Gallipoli fighting for freedom, liberty and peace on behalf of all Australians and New Zealanders, in hellish circumstances in the First World War.  At the time, we suffered more casualties than our fair quota for two small nations.

The two soldiers aiming at each other are juxtaposed as enemies, yet both are gentlemen at the end of the line fighting for a cause lost deep in their minds at gun point.  The poppies symbolise casualties and the meat symbolises all of us, after all – we are all just meat at the end of the day.

Lest we forget our soldiers who help to protect us from extremists and criminals who plot to undermine equilibrium in the world.
